A new report from Dynarisk, a global cybersecurity platform that protects hundreds of thousands of users worldwide, shows cybercriminals are active in the BC real estate sector.  

Dynarisk conducted a scan of approximately 450 real estate brokerages in BC via publicly available sources. The results found that: 

• The average cyber security score for these brokerages was 4.7 (where 10 is the most cyber secure and 1 is the least cyber secure) 
• Of these 450 brokerages, approximately 120 of them (26 per cent) had a cyber security score of 2 or lower 

They also identified two major brokerages that had their data ransomed by hacker groups within the past five years.

Aside from the professional and reputational hit you’d take if you fell victim to a cybercrime, there can be substantial financial risks as well. On average, you could potentially lose: 

• Approximately $100,000 for a compromised email loss of data 
• Anywhere from $800K upward, into the millions of dollars, if your data or systems are ransomed by hackers
