We’ve recently received reports of REALTORS® receiving lewd, harassing calls. These calls are targeting women and begin with the harasser posing as a potential client before they escalate.

What to do if you’re contacted

Trust your gut – if a potential client is making you feel uncomfortable, end the call. If you’re receiving harassing or inappropriate emails, don’t engage, and block the harasser.

We also suggest you note the time, date, and contact details of the harasser and file a report with your local police detachment using their non-emergency line.

If your harasser is making threats, or if you believe you’re in immediate danger, call 911.

Safety tips for Realtors

  • Keep your personal information private, especially on social media. For example, use a “page” on Facebook for your business, keeping your personal profile private. We also encourage you to practice these social media safety tips.
  • Always have another Realtor at your showing or open house.
  • Jot down your client’s car descriptions, license plate numbers, and physical descriptions.
  • Trust your gut — if you sense something is wrong, take steps to avoid the situation.
  • Do whatever it takes to remove yourself from an uncomfortable situation.
  • Always walk behind the attendee and show the house by directing, not leading, them.
  • Notify someone in your office or a friend that you’ll call every hour on the hour when conducting an open house or showing. If you don’t call, they should notify police.
  • Be suspicious of unsolicited links, emails, and texts. If it sounds too good to be true, it probably is.
