Help resolve disputes and support professional fairness: Volunteer for the Arbitration Committee
Greater Vancouver REALTORS® is looking for members to volunteer for the Arbitration Committee.
Arbitrators play a key role in resolving commission disputes between brokerages by acting as impartial decision-makers who review evidence and determine fair outcomes.
Because of the nature of this work, the committee requires members with significant experience and a high standard of professionalism.
For this reason, managing broker experience is required.
How arbitration works
Arbitration Panels are formed only when a dispute proceeds to arbitration.
In each case:
- each party selects one Arbitrator from the available Arbitration Committee volunteers to form an Arbitration Panel
- those two arbitrators select a panel chair from a list of experienced Arbitrators who have previously served
- the panel reviews the evidence and renders a decision on the commission dispute
This process ensures disputes are resolved fairly and by professionals who understand the industry.
Qualifications
Members applying to serve on the Arbitration Committee should have:
- a strong understanding of the REALTOR® Code
- a strong understanding of the Rules of Cooperation
- extensive industry experience
- a reputation for professionalism and ethical conduct
- the ability to remain impartial and objective
Managing broker experience is required, as arbitration decisions require a high level of professional judgment.
GVR also aims to maintain a balanced committee representing different:
- geographic areas
- brokerage affiliations
- professional perspectives
Commitment
Your time commitment will be on an as-needed basis. Serving depends on how many arbitrations take place during the year and whether you’re selected by one of the disputing parties to be an arbitrator.
If you’re appointed to an Arbitration Panel, you’ll need to commit to several hours of advance preparation alongside an in-person hearing at the GVR office. These hearings are generally a half-day and may extend beyond 5:00 pm.
